Chapter 1 reviews how organizations can evolve from a focus on hierarchies (i.e., efficiency) to systems (i.e., alignment) to capabilities (i.e., companies’ identities) to market-oriented ecosystems. In part I, chapters 2 and 3 examine why a new organizational form is required and how the companies we studied have mastered a dynamic understanding of their environment.
Organizational form follows strategy. Today’s complex, uncertain, and super dynamic business environment calls for new strategic thinking, evolving from strategic planning, strategic alignment, core competency to strategic agility.
