Name
Destination Protocol (IP) Address
Synopsis
Identifies the higher-level protocol address of the ARP packet’s destination. The packet may be either a request or a response.
- Size
Varies according to higher-level protocol in use. With IP, this field is four bytes (32 bits) long.
- Notes
Every ARP exchange consists of two distinct packets: the original request and a response to the request. The Destination IP Address field indicates the recipient of this specific ARP packet. If the ARP packet is a request, then this field will contain the IP address of the device being looked up. If the ARP packet is a response, then this field will contain the IP address of the device that sent the original request.
- Capture Sample
In the capture shown in Figure 3.17, the Destination Protocol Address field is set to the IP address of 192.168.10.80.
