Source Protocol (IP) Address

Synopsis

Identifies the higher-level address of the system issuing the ARP packet. The packet may be either a request or a response.

Size

Varies according to higher-level protocol in use. With IP, this field is four bytes (32 bits) long.

Notes

Every ARP exchange consists of two distinct packets: the original request and a response to the request. The Source Protocol Address field indicates the sender of this specific ARP packet. If the ARP packet is a request, then this field contains the IP address of the device that is sending the request. If the ARP packet is a response, then this field contains the IP address of the device that is sending the response.

Capture Sample

In the capture shown in Figure 3.15, the Source Protocol Address shows the 32-bit IP address of 192.168.10.10.
