Name
network protocol
Synopsis
A protocol used for communication over a network.
Description
Windows 2000 Server supports four common network protocols:
- NetBEUI
A fast, efficient protocol that is nonroutable and, therefore, primarily of use in a small, workgroup setting where machines running older versions of Microsoft Windows need to be supported
- NWLink
Microsoft’s version of Novell’s IPX protocol; used primarily to support legacy Novell NetWare 3.x and 4.x networks
- TCP/IP
The widely supported Internet protocol that has become the de facto standard for LANs and WANs today
- AppleTalk
Microsoft’s version of Apple’s legacy protocol for networking Macintosh computers
For more information on any of these protocols, see their associated topic in this chapter. For general information about types of network connections supported by Windows 2000 Server, see connection in this chapter. For information on how to install and configure network protocols, see network protocol.
Notes
If you want to use Active Directory, you must use TCP/IP.
