Install and configure a network protocol.
Procedures
The procedures here apply to any standard network protocol supported by Windows 2000 Server: TCP/IP, NWLink, NetBEUI, and AppleTalk. For information specific to any of these protocols, see their topic elsewhere in this chapter. For general procedures relating to creating and configuring network connections, see connection.
Configuring a Network Protocol
Start → Settings → Network and Dial-up Connections → right-click on a connection → Properties
If the connection is a local-area connection, then continue:
Select a protocol → Properties → modify settings as desired |
If the connection is a dial-up or VPN connection, then continue:
Networking → select a protocol → Properties → modify settings as desired |
Installing a Network Protocol
Start → Settings → Network and Dial-up Connections → right-click on a connection → Properties
If the connection is a local-area connection, then continue:
Install → Protocol → Add → select protocol to install |
If the connection is a dial-up or VPN connection, then continue:
Networking → Install → Protocol → Add → select protocol to install |
Notes
In most cases TCP/IP is the only protocol you will use or need unless you are connecting to legacy systems.
The fewer network protocols you use, the less unnecessary traffic broadcast by network services.
