This chapter covers the basics of video encoding and decoding and describes most of the algorithms used by standard video codecs. In addition to the encode/decode process, this chapter describes the preprocessing and post-processing used by most endpoints. Left out of this chapter is the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) packetization process, which is covered in Chapter 4, “Media Control and Transport.”
