Bringing it all together
In this concluding chapter we explain why competitive success is almost never monocausal. Competitive advantage of the firm never rests solely on a resource or even a bundle of resources. It is never built purely on the ability to innovate or internationalize operations. A firm cannot just take a free ride on the advantages that its national environment provides. Competitive advantage invariably arises out of a complex mix of interrelated factors.
As we suggested in Chapter 1, the four Rs act as prompters for evaluating firm competitiveness
a.Where are their roots?
b.How far is their reach?
c.What resources can they control, and/or have access to?
d.How good are they at recombining ideas and resources?
