The viewpoints of two key players in the whole research enterprise, the funders and the publishers, are not identical. Figure 8.1 from an F1000 webinar neatly summarizes this. The publisher is not driving the need for “all data” to be preserved. The concern of the publisher is that a person interested in one of their publications can reproduce the statements made in the publication. The implicit assumption by the publisher is also that the study is “typical.” The funder, on the other hand, may have concerns about what the team leader has selected for publication.
