Strategic communications have been an integral part of formal government communication campaigns for more than a century. Well-known examples include the Committee on Public Information’s efforts in World War I and the Office of War Information’s activities in World War II. Lesser-known examples include Gifford Pinchot’s promotion of the fledgling U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Children’s Bureau’s efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality in the early 20th century.
