Coaching needs to be a mutual process to be most effective. It’s not about dictating to someone; it’s working together for growth. Key to making the coaching relationship mutual is respect. The power of respect is not only in being polite (although this makes for smoother conversations), but in truly seeing the other person as important and multi-faceted. If you are limited in how you view your employees and do not respect them for who they are, then your impact as a coach will be limited.
To make the coaching process mutual:
1. Have a balanced give and take.
2. See mistakes as learning opportunities.
3. Be available and accessible.
4. Make agreements.
5. Follow through on your commitments.
