Defining Strategy
Before deriving from complex adaptive systems why strategy must be a central rule, it is helpful to understand what is valuable in other definitions of strategy and where they fall short. A collection of 75 definitions from authorities in multiple fields shows how widely opinions vary. (The list is shown online {web/supplement}). The definitions are found in dictionaries, strategy textbooks, and other literature; they come from business, military, and geopolitical strategists; scenario planners; economists; and complexity and game theorists.
