Owen McCall, CIO of the Warehouse Group, was trying to think of a way of communicating a pivotal part of leadership. As he remembered a recent vacation, he hit on a powerful metaphor:
We were on holiday and went to Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand. As you walk along the glacier, there is a river lined with rocks the perfect height for jumping off, if you are a five-year-old boy.
My son, Ryan, would climb on a rock that was maybe a foot high, jump off into the nearest clear space, climb up a different rock, and jump off again, because that is what five-year-old boys ...
