THIS CHAPTER continues the story of Corning Microarray Technologies (CMT). We show how Corning reconstructed the CMT organization with a new and distinct DNA and explain why progress accelerated as a result. Then we present a set of general recommendations for overcoming the forgetting challenge.

Major Restructuring and Change in Leadership

During a period of senior staff turnover in 1999, Corning promoted Fred Allen to lead Corning’s development group and appointed Martin Ford to the position of president of Corning Technologies (of which Corning Life Sciences was a part).1 The two senior executives thoroughly analyzed the issues faced by CMT and began making changes.
