III The Scrap Market
Scrap utilization in steelmaking could be increased in a number of ways. The most straightforward manner would be to increase steel production without attempting to modify current steelmaking technology.16 Obviously, being closely coupled to demand for steel, the volume of steel production can hardly be influenced by the iron and steel industry.
Independent of the demand for steel, a purely technological method of increasing scrap utilization would be attempting to raise the rate of scrap in steel furnace charge. This method will now be discussed in detail in terms of electric-arc furnace technology.
