Coping With Massive Change

The future is already here when it comes to automation. Bain and Company’s analysts studied their crystal balls and concluded that automation might eliminate 20 to 30 percent of current jobs, particularly those of middle- to low-income workers, by the end of the 2020s. The result would be that the country’s anemic demand growth would constrain economic expansion. They also predicted that growing levels of wealth inequality and market imbalances could trigger a reassessment of government’s role in the marketplace.*
