Chapter 5. Reviewing and Approving Submissions

A dedicated Author with a singular vision (and plenty of spare time) can search the Internet for worthwhile and informative ideas. However, a typical Slash site harnesses the powers of its userbase to find and recommend potential Stories. This can relieve the Authors from the often tedious task of continually scaring up fresh Stories, moving them to an editorial role. Slash provides several tools that enable Authors to filter, review, and polish user submissions into publishable gems.

The Submit Story Page

Users submit Stories via the Submit Story page, available almost everywhere through the SubmitStory link. The Submit Story page presents a simplified version of the Edit Story page (see Figure 5-1). Its relative URL is /submit.pl. When a logged-in user accesses the page, Slash fills in some form values from the user’s profile information. Otherwise, the form will contain generic Anonymous User information. In either case, users can edit or delete these values before submitting the form—even logged-in users can submit a Story anonymously. (As anyone who’s seen All The President’s Men can attest, all the best Stories require anonymity).[15]
