The Lens
This chapter addresses the construction of lenses for use with the film-holders and cameras presented in Chapters 1 and 2. It begins with a survey of essential lens configurations with related subjects like focal length, angle of view, f-stop, and aberrations being considered. Following this is a list of tools and materials needed to construct lenses, leading to the procedural steps for constructing four types of mid-nineteenth-century lenses: the singlet, or landscape lens; the symmetrical duplet, or periscopic lens; the asymmetrical duplet, or portrait lens; and the symmetrical triplet.1 Brief historical summaries for each lens are also provided.
