When building applications today the call of using web services is strong. Web services provide an easy way to build distributed applications because of their use of open protocols and data formats (generally HTTP and XML).
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a new way of thinking about how to build distributed applications in this new web services world. The ideas of SOA are actually fairly simple and straightforward. They are based around four basic tenets:
