2.1 Fundamentals of Voltage Source Inverters

The three-phase voltage source pulsewidth modulation (PWM) converter, also called voltage source inverter (VSI), can perform the connection between the DC side and the AC side of a source/load coupling: if the energy flows from the DC side to AC side, the converter behaves like an inverter; otherwise, it behaves like a rectifier (see Figure 2.1).
