Business Connectivity Services (BCS) Overview
BCS is an upgrade from the earlier SharePoint Server 2007 BDC. The BDC, however, was only offered as part of SharePoint Server 2007 Enterprise edition. In SharePoint 2010 BCS is available to both SharePoint Server 2010 and SharePoint Foundation 2010, although some limitations apply when configuring BCS connections in SharePoint Foundation. For example, you are not able to use search to index ECTs in SharePoint Foundation or take the data offline using Outlook or SharePoint Workspace. BCS enables you to configure data connections to a variety of external systems. With the help of a developer, you can configure data connections to almost any external system.
