Preface
The June 2010 issue of Discover magazine ran a feature article titled “The Power Plan” (pp. 47–51). A quote from that article reads, “A stunning 57 percent of our energy ends up wasted.… Investing in energy efficiency would be equivalent to tapping an entirely new source of energy.” In other words, we could more than double our energy availability, without increasing pollution, without increased risk of oil spills, without worrying about additional global warming, and without additional cost, simply by eliminating “waste.”
