It's incredible to think how different my life would be if Steve Jobs hadn't co-founded Apple or Galen Rowell hadn't picked up a camera. These two visionaries set forces in motion that collided and became my career. And to this day, their body of work inspires me.
I'm also grateful to the team at Lynda.com, the editors at Macworld magazine, the staff at Lowepro, and all the members of The Digital Story virtual camera club who have provided me with the means to make a living doing the only work I really care about.
At home, my family never knows what's going to appear on our Wi-Fi network or be strewn across the dining room table. They patiently wait for me to clean up my experiments so we can have our dinner. I'm lucky to have them. They support my wildest ideas.
Photographers need willing photo subjects. I've been fortunate to have many artists work in front of my lens to help me create engaging images. Three in particular — lovely ladyJ on the front cover, Leah Lavoneh on the back, and Alyssa Jayne on the opening page for Chapter 1 — clearly illustrate that the photographer is only half of the equation.
Carol Kessel at Wiley Publishing approached me about writing a guide that focuses on photography and tablet computing. My thanks to her, and the entire team at Wiley and The Zango Group (especially Galen Gruman and Carol Person) for publishing a book that I hope contributes to a community that has given me so much.
