In exploring the route to overall performance in managers, we shall draw on a variety of evidence, the main types of which are set out below.

Personality traits and mental abilities

There are two main strands of evidence. Firstly, data on the personalities of average managers compared to the general population average. This will reveal in what way, if any, managers are different. Secondly, we shall look at any associations of personality and ability factors with overall managerial performance.
