2.1 Rapid global spread

COVID-19 showcased the interconnectedness of our modern world. What began as a localized outbreak in Wuhan, China, swiftly evolved into a global pandemic. The virus exploited the ease and speed of international travel, crossing borders with alarming rapidity. By early 2020, numerous countries reported their first cases, marking the virus’ successful infiltration of various regions. Figure 2.1 shows the overall figures for confirmed cases, deaths, hospital admissions, and patients in ICU per million people, due to COVID-19.
