Chapter 2Variation: Boolean Representations
Learning Objectives
- Construct Boolean logic statements to describe a biological system
- Calculate a state matrix, identifying stable states
- Determine dynamics of the system based on state matrix outputs
- Understand how key parameter values affect system dynamics
We start our exploration of the negatively autoregulated circuit described in Chapter 1 using a classical Boolean approach that relies on work performed by Rene Thomas at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium. When regulation of gene expression was first discovered, Thomas started exploring how to model it; he began with this approach. It’s a perfect way to start building intuition!
