Innovation and waste prevention
1. Introduction
Textile production is responsible for a number of environmental problems, such as the generation of waste in the industrial and apparel manufacturing processes, as well as in post-consumption stages (Zonatti, Amaral, Gasi, Baruque-Ramos, & Duleba, 2015). As for solid waste in Brazil specifically, 175 tonnes of scraps are generated every year in the folding and trimming processes, 90% of which are estimated to be disposed of in landfills or irregular dumpsites (Sinditêxtil-SP, 2012). Information on the proportion of material wasted in various textile segments in Brazil is presented in Table 17.1.
