FCoE Encapsulation
As fundamentally Ethernet traffic, FCoE packets must be exchanged in a context of a VLAN. Just as virtual LANs create logical separation for the network traffic, so do virtual SANs by creating logical separation for the storage traffic. With FCoE, Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switches enable mapping between FCoE VLANs and Fibre Channel VSANs, where all FCoE packets tagged with specific VLAN ID are assumed to belong to the corresponding Fibre Channel VSAN.
The Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switches implementation also expects all VLANs carrying FCoE traffic to be exclusively used for this purpose; that is, no other types of traffic, such as IP network traffic, should be carried over these VLANs. Figure 11-12 depicts FCoE frame format. ...
