Chapter 6Printing
Once you have a fully prepared 3D model, you are ready to import it into your 3D printer’s software. The printer control software is called “slicing software” because it virtually slices the 3D model into teeny, tiny layers (see Figure 6.1). It then translates this information into a language called g-code, which instructs your printer how to produce the object; instructions like where to move, how fast to go, what paths to follow, and how much filament to extrude when. Some printer manufacturers provide proprietary slicing software, while others use open source.
