Waves

Physicists describe many phenomena in terms of waves – we’re all familiar with sound waves, light waves and electromagnetic waves. Waves are what we see in water, but what have they got to do with sound or light or the electromagnetic spectrum?

Waves are an example of a scientific model: physicists study waves in water and apply what they discover to explain other phenomena. Waves are very different from the particles of the kinetic model of matter – one set of waves can pass straight through another whereas if two particles collide they bounce off one other.
