Errata for Essential CVS, Second Edition

Sixth command line on the page

Every command on pages 21-22 preceding the 6th command on page 22 work as the book shows. I differ from the book only in that I sudo each command, but successfully so until I submit the command
chown -R cvs /var/lib/cvsroot
The failure message is
chown: invalid user: `cvs'

I log this reaction after a brief Web search for the error failed to shed any light on this impediment.

Note from the Author or Editor:
I could have written this more clearly. As I state in the second paragraph after those commands, there should be a separate user (ie, not 'root') for running the CVS server. It would have been better to put that paragraph ahead of those commands.

The "invalid user: 'cvs'" error message is stating that there is no such user created at that point.

Read on two paragraphs after those commands to find out how to make a user. My mistake there.
