In the iPhone/Stanza version of the book:

Problem:

No images, including the cover on the first page, are displayed

How to reproduce the problem:

- Install the book in the iPhone using iTunes. If necessary, delete it before.

- On the very first start of the book, while the "Uncompressing..." message is shown, press the Home button on the phone

- Reopen the App. Text is there, Images are missing.

Workaround:

- Reinstall App from iPhone without interfering the initial unpack sequence

Remarks:

- Why is the eBook uncompressed on first launch? It should be easy to just put it uncompressed in the application bundle, the application bundle will be zipped and compressed by Apple anyway.

Disclosure:
I sell eBooks on the App Store in Germany.

1.10.7 online version or page 19 in printed version
Two Finger Tap section

When I tried to 'zoom out' on Google Maps on my iPhone 3G, it did not work by tapping once with two fingers. I needed to tap TWICE with two fingers slightly separated for the 'zoom out' to work.

I 'cut and paste' the section below from the online version.

"1.10.7. Two-Finger Tap
This weird little gesture crops up only in one place: in Google Maps. It means "zoom out." To perform it, you tap once on the screen?with two fingers."

All Pages

Starting at Page 2 of "iPhone, the Missing Manual, 2nd Edition",
the formatting of text makes it exceedingly hard to read. In
my copy, at least, from pg 2 on, HEADERS are printed in black
ink, but the actual text explaining the subject is printed in
grey ink. The contrast between the light gray and white paper
makes it very hard to read.

Does the savings in ink really justify this? It was disturbing enough
to me that I will not purchase further O'Reilly books by mail or
electronic means since I can't examine them first!

2nd paragraph

The 7th line "...the iPhone now syncs wirelessly with corporate networks over using Microsoft Exchange..." I'm guessing that "over wsa to be replaced by "using", however both remain.

In the Tip section

there is a starting " with no ending " for the link to General section of the book.
This is true for almost all links within the document.

Middle of page, after tip section

When showing what wiggling icons look like, the actual image of the iphone is missing. All I see are orange lines and several captions. I can understand what they mean, but in such a well done book, this missing image was a bit jarring.

first tip, near top of page

The tip says "Your iPhone's own phone number appears at the very top of the Contacts list - or at least it does when you open Contacts from within the Phone module." I have the latest update to iPhone version 2 software (2.2.1), and my own phone number does NOT display here or anywhere else that I can find.

Are you going to issue an update that covers the new version 3 software that was recently announced? It will be released to the public this summer and I'd sure like to review all its features beforehand.

Graph beneath "Favorites List"

The text under "Favorites List" states that the iPhone doesn't have any speed dial buttons; but, as with many other AT&T phones, if you press and hold the number "1" it checks your voice mail.
Not a major error; but, something which really helps.

I love the book and Mr. Pogue's work in the Times and on TV.

Best wishes

4th paragraph (last on page - a "tip" box)

You advise readers to download the iCall application from Apple's iTunes store to experience VOIP on the iPhone.

Actually, Apple seems to be sitting on this application (one can only speculate that it would reduce AT&T's revenues by allowing cheaper or free calls so AT&T is getting Apple to suppress it.)

According to the iCall website, the app has been "in review" at the app store since October 18, 2008 but it was not available on this date (Jan 29, 2009).

Thanks.

Pogue describes the use of "teleflip" service to make email-to-text messages, free! This is clearly incorrect. Teleflip went out of business this Fall ('08). The service can no longer be used.

First paragraph

I have Feb 2008 printing.

The statement for Call Time is: "That's right, ... a cellphone actually keeps track of your minutes ...

This is not true. The "Current Period Call Time Usage" does not work according to Apple and ATT technical support. The only way to find usage or remaining minutes is to call *MIN# (*646#) and receive a text message from ATT on remaining mins in the current billing cycle.

it states that Apple with replace your phone for any issue that is not your fault. This is incorrect as the warranty only covers manufacturer defects not accidental damage. Accidental damage does not require you cause the accident.
