Mr. Karp wrote "many types of connections are "asynchronous": 56 K modems,
..., download at around 53.2 kbps, but upload at only 33.6 kbps. Likewise, a
midrange DSL connection might be rated at 384 kbps download and 128 kbps
upload."

In my opinion the Author didn't mean "asynchronous". The right term is
"asymetric". Asynchronous means, that every Frame has a start bit and an end
bit, so this term depends on time (greek:chronos) and not on different
"upload- and download speed".

Allthough DSL depends on ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) the speedfactor is
just "symetric or asymetric".
