Chapter 6. Punctuation Chart

In the iBooks version of this, the "new line" of Say this: the result is exactly not what you should get. In the chart as a picture (where text size formatting issues should be resolved) "milk (new line) bread (new line) Cheez Whiz" generates milk bread Cheez Whiz all on the same line in the chart.

Note

According to the Note section to turn off translucent menu bar I do the following:

Open System Preference --> Desktop & Screen Saver --> Desktop and then turn off "Translucent menu bar"

I have a 12 inch MacBook (2016) with OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.6 and I do not have "Translucent menu bar" option in my Desktop preferences.

Please advise!

Thank you!

Technically not an error but of omission... re: Sleep mode.

Several ways to enter "Sleep Mode" but there is no description/explanation regarding how to 'wake' from sleep mode. I'm from the PC world where moving the mouse does the trick... on the Mac moving the mouse doesn't seem to do anything. This might be a Preferences or Configuration thing... an explanation may be helpful.

Thanks...

there is no longer a secure delete of the trah.3rd paragraph and tip

The page talks about secure and forever emptying of the trash. At least on my Macbook pro mid 2014 there is no longer secure emptying of the trash. It may be due to the type of hard drive in my laptop.

Betty Kantrowitz  Jan 24, 2016
Printed Page 96
Paragraphs 1 through 4

El Capitan OS appears to have eliminated the "Secure Empty Trash command. The Finder now states " empty trash" the word secure just doesn't appear. Also in the TIP listed on the same page going to Finder, Preference, Advanced and turning on "Empty Trash Securely" is also missing. It just says empty trash.

Anonymous  Mar 26, 2016
Printed Page 96
The first half of the page, "Emptying the Trash II: Secure and Forever."

On page 96, under the heading "Emptying the Trash II: Secure and Forever," Mr. Pogue states that, under Mac OS X, users can empty their virtual trashcan securely, by selecting the "Secure Empty Trash" option from the Finder menu. However, this option is no longer available in OS 10.11, even for Mac users with hard disk drives (HDDs). Furthermore, in the "Tip" section of "Emptying the Trash II," Mr. Pogue states that the user can "direct the Mac to use this secure method [of emptying the trash] all the time." However, this is no longer true; there is no longer an option under Finder > Finder Preferences > Advanced to "Empty Trash securely."

However, this is a minor technical mistake in an otherwise brilliant manual. Thank you for your time.

Kind regards,

Chris Shaneyfelt

4th paragraph and following

The 4th paragraph begins, "Today, there are two ways to run Windows . . ." It is followed by a bulleted item. For parallelism, one expects a 2nd bulleted item to describe the 2nd way. Instead, on page 451, that 2nd way is described in a text box, and has been preceded by several bulleted items internal to the first "way." This should be fixed somehow.

As another reader noted, the Secure Erase option is gone from emptying the trash. The "Erase home folder securely" option still exists as described here for deleting an account's home folder but I have doubts that it would actually be effective if all or part of the machine's "disk" consists of an SSD since rewriting a sector of data on an SSD does not normally write over the same location. This would leave the data somewhere on the device and I think the NSA would be up to the task of finding it.

Jill is not one of the selectable or downloadable voices for the Mac.

“But that’s kid stuff. Truth is, the Mac can read almost anything you like: text you pass your cursor over, alert messages, menus, and any text document in any program. It can speak in your choice of dozens of synthesizer voices, ages 8 to 50. Most read with a twangy, charmingly Norwegian accent—but some of the newest voices (like Alex, Jill, Samantha, and Tom) sound scarily like a professional human voice-over artist.”

The TIP box describes a Window→Address Panel command to browse Contacts from within Mail. This is not available in Mail 9.2. Instead, there is a blue ⊕ symbol that's displayed on the To:, Cc:, etc. address line when you are composing a message and editing that line. Clicking on that symbol brings up a window listing your contacts.
