Chapter 3. IEEE 802.15.4 Physical Layer
Introduction
IEEE 802.15.4 developed the physical and Media Access Control (MAC) layers for low-rate personal-area network (LR-PAN). The first specification was published in 2003 and was later revised in 2006. However, the revised 2006 specification is backward compatible with the 2003 specification.
The physical layer operates in the Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band and, in Europe, in the 868 to 868.6MHz band known simply as the 868MHz band. It provides data transmission and reception, modulation of outgoing signals, and demodulation of incoming signals, and it manages the function of the transceiver (transmitter and receiver). The physical layer also performs the following functions:
