20.1. Why Use XML for Documents?
You gain several advantages when your primary-source documents are XML.
Authors gain control over correct display of content without being style specialists (or even having to know the styles to be used).
Authors are content experts; editors are style experts. Unfortunately, the traditional mechanism of communication between the two is a display style that might be called “manuscript”; it is traditionally very limited, and—for technical work especially— conveying all the necessary content distinctions is difficult.
