The Standard 802.11 and the IEEE
Regardless of how the letters on the wireless equipment are presented, they all fall under a standard referred to as IEEE 802.11.
IEEE stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. While this may not sound like a very exciting group of people, the IEEE is the worldwide standards body for all sorts of technologies, and it has greatly contributed to advancement of technologies ranging from the Internet, to the phone system, to DVDs, and much, much more.
