The Anatomy of a Security Update
With Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, the security update is packaged within an MSU file. The package is installed using the Windows Update Stand-Alone Installer process (wusa.exe) and contains a cabinet (CAB) file for the update, an XML file that describes the update, and a properties file that includes the strings used by the installer. (If more than one update is included in the package, a separate CAB file is included for each one.)
