At the time of this writing, there are multiple types of virtualization technologies available from different hardware manufacturers, which have evolved over the years. Virtualization technologies are not only used for running multiple operating systems on a physical machine, but they have also become the basics for important security features like the Virtual Secure Mode (VSM) and Hypervisor-Enforced Code Integrity (HVCI), which can’t be run without a hypervisor.
