Name
Disk Management — PP
Synopsis
Manages disks on local and remote computers.
Description
Disk Management can be used for managing both local and remote disk subsystems. You can use it to perform such administrative tasks as:
Adding or removing disks
Creating and managing partitions and volumes, including fault-tolerant volumes
Performing disk-maintenance tasks such as defragmenting, backing up, and checking a disk for errors
Configuring disk quotas and permissions and sharing disks for use over the network
For administrators familiar with Windows NT 4.0 Server, Disk Management performs similar functions to those provided by the NT administrative tool called Disk Administrator.
Using Disk Management
You can access Disk Management either by:
Start → Programs → Administrative Tools → Computer Management → Storage → Disk Management
Right-click on My Computer → Manage → System Tools → Disk Management
Installing the Disk Management snap-in into a new or existing console
The console tree for this tool only displays the root Disk Manager node. By default, the top section of the Details Pane displays a list of partitions and volumes on the system, while the bottom section displays a graphical representation of the partitions or volumes on each installed hard disk (see Section later in this article on how to change these views).
For general information see disks and disk quota.
