Name
OU
Synopsis
Create an OU, move an OU, and move objects to a different OU.
Procedures
The following procedures assume that you have the Active Directory Users and Computers console open.
Create an OU
Use this method to create a hierarchical structure of OUs within a domain, if desired (see OU for more information):
Right-click on a domain or an OU within a domain → New → Organizational Unit → specify name for new OU |
You can also rename or delete OUs you create.
Move an OU
Right-click on an OU → Move → specify new parent OU or specify the domain as the parent
Specifying the domain as the parent makes the OU a top-level OU.
Move an Object to a Different OU
Right-click on an object in original OU → Move → specify target OU
Notes
You cannot delete the default containers created when Active Directory is installed—namely Builtin, Users, Groups, Computers, Domain Controllers, ForeignSecurityPrincipals, and the special containers visible only using View → Advanced Features.
For information on how to delegate authority for an OU, see delegation in this chapter. To apply Group Policy to an OU, see Group Policy Objects (GPOs) in this chapter.
Additional tabs are available on the property sheet for a domain when View → Advanced Features is selected.
