Name
Emergency Repair Disk (ERD)
Synopsis
Create an Emergency Repair Disk, and repair a system using the ERD.
Procedures
Use this procedure when your system fails to boot successfully to the point where you can log on. The ERD can only be used to repair system files, the partition boot sector, and the startup environment for multiboot systems. To repair the registry, use the Recovery Console instead (see Recovery Console in this chapter).
Create an ERD
Start → Programs → Accessories → Backup → General → Emergency Repair Disk → select “Also back up the registry” → insert a blank, formatted floppy → OK
Repair a System Using the ERD
Boot the system using the four Windows 2000 boot floppies.
Select the Repair or Recover option.
Select the Emergency Repair Process.
Select the Fast Repair option, which attempts an automatic repair, or select Manual to manually specify which aspect of the system you want to attempt to repair.
Insert the ERD when requested and the Windows 2000 CD if system files need to be restored. (The CD may not be required if the
%SystemRoot%\Repair
directory was successfully updated when the ERD was created.)
If the repair is successful, the system will restart and you will be able to log on. If not, you may need to rebuild your server (see backup and restore in this chapter).
Notes
If you don’t have the four boot floppies, you can create new ones by inserting the Windows 2000 CD and:
Start → Run →
<CD_drive>\Bootdisk\Makebt32.exe
→ OK |
