5 Conducting Performance Appraisal Meetings

Now it’s time to meet with the employee you’ve evaluated. You’re ready with the evaluation form you’ve completed, your supporting documentation, the employee’s performance plan for the evaluation period, and notes from others about his or her performance. Just before the meeting, you reviewed the evaluation so it’s fresh in your mind. You’re ready to discuss the ratings and the facts supporting each rating.

Before each meeting, remind yourself of the purpose: to improve performance. Repeat the “mantra” suggested by the words of Robert Bacal quoted in Chapter 4: “The review process is a partnership. … It’s a problem-solving process. … It’s about looking forward, not looking backward.”
