It was a Friday night in 2017. I was on a Delta flight from New York to San Diego, where I took advantage of satellite TV to watch the women’s college basketball semifinal games in Dallas. I was especially interested in the second game, between Mississippi State and the University of Connecticut. As I mentioned earlier, UConn was riding a winning streak of 111 consecutive games, being followed on a daily basis by an HBO film crew, and standing at the doorstep of winning its fifth straight national title.
