I have argued that true high performance, of the sort that Peter Vaill described, is the natural product of a well-functioning self-organizing system. It comes ultimately from the search for fitness as the system seeks better ways to be——internally with its own mechanisms and processes, and externally with the relationships to the environment. This is an ongoing process of adaptation as changes, large and small, ripple inward and outward, initiating still more changes.
