THE GATEWAY/GATEKEEPER MODEL
Several terms are used to describe the placement of the VoIP functions in the VoIP physical entities, and we have explained some of them in this book. This aspect of packet telephony can be confusing because the various specifications use different terms to describe the same or similar functions. For example, H.323 uses the term Gatekeeper to describe a nearly similar entity residing in the MGCP as a Call Agent.
To help clarify these terms and concepts, [VAND98][2] has published a model of the Media Gateway Controller and the Media Gateway, which also includes the Gatekeeper, the H.323 terminal, and the signaling Gateway.
