“We have virtualized our WebSphere environment and we are now considering open source applications server alternatives. What options do we have in this space?”
The first point of inspection is whether the customer application uses Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs). If it does not use EJBs, you can migrate to vFabric tc Server relatively easily. However, if it does use EJBs, you can leverage the Spring Migration Analyzer (SMA) to guide you through the migration process.
You can obtain the SMA tool from https://github.com/SpringSource/spring-migration-analyzer. The installation and usage is quite simple.
