Spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle, in his best seller treatise A New Earth1, notably remarks we really only act out of two emotions: love and fear. If we aren’t acting out of love, we’re acting out of fear – and the new tapeless file-based workflow has instilled plenty of it. Our challenge as storytellers in this crazy digital-run-amok time is to confront our fear and replace it with, to the extent possible, love for the new technology. If we feel the pain of rapid change, of working with HDDs, SSDs, MXF, LANs, and P2 cards, it is because we are resisting that change. As Tolle points out: what we resist, persists.
