In Chapter 2 we highlighted that navigating paradox is the HR competency that most impacts business performance. Then in Chapter 8, we reviewed the logic and tools for navigating paradox. One of the long-standing paradoxes (or tensions) in the HR profession is strategic (long-term, transformational) versus foundational (short-term, transactional, or tactical) work. Many in HR continue to advocate that HR should move from short to long term, from transactional to transformational work.
