THIS PART OF THE BOOK transitions from preparing good questions and planning research to conducting research. While this is often an exciting aspect of research, proper preparations and situational awareness often go hand in hand with the most effective research initiatives.
- Making Research Happen
At its core, research requires practice and rehearsal. Chapter 8 will apply the logistics outlined earlier in a more how-to manner as you sit down with stakeholders and customers alike.
- Managing People During Research
Just as stretching before exercising is helpful, any good research initiative starts with a warm-up exercise. This allows the designers to adjust to the researcher mindset and allows participants to get comfortable with the tasks and conversations they’ve agreed to be part of. Chapter 9 will walk you through this process.

The best-laid research plans often have at least one unexpected surprise. Chapter 10 will identify ways to pivot when you face common hurdles such as technical issues, personality challenges, or a sudden shift in expectations.

At its core, all research studies human behavior. Chapter 11 will look at some of the softer skills invaluable in being respectful and effective as product designers.
