Startup—also known as bootstrapping— is the process that occurs in the period between turning a computer on and being able to use it. In previous versions of Windows, you probably didn’t stick around to observe this process directly, as you felt it best to spend the time more productively—doing the crossword puzzle, weeding the front yard, knitting a new sweater. With Windows XP, the process has been sped up to the point that you can barely fetch the newspaper before the Welcome screen is up. It would be nice to be able to just appreciate the improvement and stop there.
